Grayton Beach gives out exactly 150 of them a year. One hundred and fifty permits to drive on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in America. People wait for that lottery like it means something. It does. Four wheel drive dropping down onto sugar white sand with the Gulf spreading out in front of you and nothing between you and the water but a little air pressure and a whole lot of luck. No boardwalk. No parking structure. No velvet rope. Just the beach the way it was always supposed to be experienced — from the inside of something with mud on the tires and salt on the windows and nowhere specific to be.
